The mechanism of halogen liberation in the polar troposphere

چکیده
Sudden depletions of tropospheric ozone during spring were reported from the Arctic and also from Antarctic coastal sites. Field studies showed that those depletion events are caused by reactive halogen species, especially bromine compounds. However the source and seasonal variation of reactive halogen species is still not completely un-5 derstood. There are several indications that the halogen mobilisation from the sea ice surface of the polar oceans may be the most important source for the necessary halo-gens. Here we present a 1-D model study aimed at determining the primary source of reactive halogens. The model includes gas phase and heterogeneous bromine and chlorine chemistry as well as vertical transport between the surface and the top of the 10 boundary layer. The autocatalytic Br release by photochemical processes (bromine explosion) and subsequent rapid bromine catalysed ozone depletion is well reproduced in the model and the major source of reactive bromine appears to be the sea ice surface. The sea salt aerosol alone is not sufficient to yield the high levels of reactive bromine in the gas phase necessary for fast ozone depletion. However, the aerosol efficiently 15 'recycles' less reactive bromine species (e.g. HBr) and feeds them back into the ozone destruction cycle. Isolation of the boundary layer air from the free troposphere by a strong temperature inversion was found to be critical for boundary layer ozone depletion to happen. The combination of strong surface inversions and presence of sunlight occurs only during polar spring.

In the earth-ocean-atmosphere system, the halogenated species take part in the cycles of several key processes involving both gas and heterogeneous interactions. The atmospheric cycles of reactive halogens are very complex specifically for those emitted from natural sources. As far as their roles in the tropospheric chemistry, the halogen compounds particularly those containing bromine (Br) and...
متن کاملImpact of Lewis acid catalyst on the regioselectivity and kinetics of 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction of azidobenzene with acrolein: a theoretical study using DFT
In the present work, impact of Lewis acid (LA) catalysts BF3, BCl3, and BBr3 on the kinetics andregioselectivity of 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition (1,3-DC) reaction between azidobenzene and acroleinwas theoretically studied using B3LYP/6-31G* level. Our results indicate while the uncatalyzed 1,3-DC reaction under investigation takes place via a non-polar, non-regioselective, and lowasynchronous proc...

Background: The maternal age effect for trisomy is well known. However what is less established is whether certain women are more (or less) prone to segregation errors, independent of age. Trisomy arises primarily through maternal meiosis I chromosome segregation errors however the precise mechanism by which these errors occur is unclear. Current dogma attributes the origin of trisomy to malseg...

Mountain systems have an important role on meteorological variations. Different components of the mountain affect the atmospheric parameters and have essential role in atmosphereic circulation. Garmesh wind is one of the most well-known phenomena that are related to mountain systems. In this research, mechanism of garmesh wind are identified using database of garmesh wind in the last 29 y...
